The Miraculous Shrine of Maleshwar Mahadev – Where the Shivling Changes Direction with the Sun’s Movement
Located in Mahar Kalan village near Samod in the Aravalli mountain range, about 40 kilometers from Jaipur, lies the ancient Maleshwar Mahadev Temple. The Shivling here tilts in alignment with the Sun’s transition between Uttarayan (northward movement) and Dakshinayan (southward movement). Inscriptions dating back to 1101 AD are carved on the pillars of the temple, attesting to its antiquity. The temple houses a self-manifested Shivling (Swayambhu Lingam).
Nestled in nature’s lap, the temple is surrounded by waterfalls, natural ponds, and ancient ruins, making it a picturesque destination. Devotees visit daily, but during the month of Sawan, large groups of Kanwariyas arrive to perform rituals and offer holy water to Lord Shiva.
It is believed that Mahar Kalan village was once part of the legendary Mahishmati city, ruled by the mighty king Sahasrabahu. This connection is said to be the reason behind the temple’s name, Maleshwar Mahadev.
Thanks to the natural beauty of Samod and Mahar Kalan, the site has also become a popular tourist destination. Several Bollywood films have been shot here, including Dataa, Bees Saal Baad, Bantwara, Karan Arjun, Koyla, Loha, Yugandhar, Soldier, Itihaas, Mehndi, and Maidan-e-Jung. The waterfalls nearby also attract visitors for picnics and leisure trips.
This temple is a fascinating blend of spirituality, history, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit for both devotees and travelers.
